(Hier gibt es eine deutsche Version dieses Artikels.)

After my short comparison between Vista and Ubuntu has been published in the Second Life Herald, there has been the observation that my “research” does not live up to scientific standarts:

“What I always find hilarious [...] is that they’d think that a 17-minute, 1-time test at 2:00 am when log-ons aren’t very high constitutes “a test”. At the very least, you’d think they’d try to make it more reliable by testing it, say, 25 times at different times of day; 25 times at the same time of day or something/”

And that is true. A one time test is not representative.

So, let’s do this in the open-source way – as a collaborative effort! I cannot run the proposed 25 or 50 tests. But together we can do much more than that. So I ask you to do the following:

  • Start WIndows, stop all unneccessary background tasks like office-quick-launch, mail-notification, and the like. Do not turn off personal firewall since it would not be wise to connect to the internet without it. So the personal firewall is regarded as being “part of the OS”
  • log into SL, pick a place to do the test and let the scenery rez.
  • Press Ctrl-Shift-1 to see the performance statistics
  • Walk up and down a little, so you get the feeling of where the FPS are high and where they are low
  • At some point, when they are quite high, press “Print Screen” to copy a screenshot into the clipboard
  • Log out of SL, and paste the screenshot into your graphic-program of choice (MS-Paint will do). Save it with a filename like this: yyyy-mm-dd_hh:mmpm_Gridname_OS.jpg (e.g.: “2007-07-16_02:15pm_Dublin_Vista.jpg” or “2007-07-17_01:45am_Berlin_WinXP.jpg”). Use Second Life time, so we are “in the same timezone”. Please use jpg, png or bmp as file formats.
  • Reboot into Linux, make sure the SL-settings are the same like in Windows, and do the same thing. Make sure you look into the same direction like in WIndows when doing the screenshot
  • Send both pictures, along with information on your hardware (CPU, graphics-card, amount of RAM) and your Linux-Distro (name, version, desktop environment) to slbenchmark@stots.de.

If you can run the test at different times and/or locations, please do so. But send each result in a seperate e-mail.

I will let every contributor know about the results. If I actually do get more than 25 sample, I will “publish” the result here.

Thanks alot for everybody who helps me out with this,

Stef Wade
