Im Blog Indiskretion Ehrensache nimmt JRvM Stellung zu seiner internen Mail, in der er Blogger ziemlich übel beschimpfte. Er versucht zu erklären wie es zu diesen Ausfälligkeiten kam, und dass er ein guter Sportsmann ist, der auch Kritik einstecken kann und lernfähig ist. So ganz ist ihm dies jedoch nicht gelungen. Auf folgende Punkte möchte ich ihn noch hinweisen:

  • Vielleicht klang auch etwas Neid auf Euch durch, da die Form von Meinungsäußerung, die ich als Werbetexter seit über 30 Jahren betreibe, alles andere als frei ist – Jeder so, wie er es sich aussucht. Keiner zwingt JRvM dazu (nur) Werbung zu machen. Er könnte vielleicht sogar als Hobby bloggen. Dabei stellt sich aber ein Problem:
  • Die Klowände sind ein Symbol für das Anpinkeln und Verpissen – für Meinungsäußerung im Schutz der Anonymität – Falsch. Anonym bloggen geht nicht. Jeder Blogger steht mit Namen und Anschrift im Impressum. Die, die das nicht tun laufen hochgradig Gefahr, deshalb abgemahnt zu werden. Das Internet ist nicht mehr anonym. Es war es auch nie.
  • …empfinde ich es als kommunikativen Hausfriedensbruch, dass eine interne Mail wie eine Sau durchs Dorf „Kleinbloggersheim“ getrieben wird. – Da sollten Sie den Mitarbeiter, der diese interne Mail weiterleitete zur Rechenschaft ziehen.
  • Absatz zwei, der dieses Recht [auf freie Meinungsäußerung] einschränkt, wenn die persönliche Ehre verletzt wird? – Wer hat hier wen als “Klowandbesudler” bezeichnet? Kritik an der Qualität der geleisteten Arbeit ist keine verletzung der persönlichen Ehre!

Aber wir wollen ja nicht nur kritisieren: Sehr geehrter Herr JRvM, Sie und Ihre Mitarbeiter haben beim Verfassen dieses Briefes eine gute Arbeit geleistet. Man könnte Ihn zwar in Details noch verbessern. Im Großen und Ganzen haben Sie damit aber gezeigt, dass Sie sich darauf verstehen, einen Konflikt nicht eskalieren zu lassen. Auch beherzigen Sie den Grundsatz “Auch schlechte Kritiken bringen einen ins Gespräch”. Jedoch haben Sie nicht beachtet, dass sich die Masse der Empfänger nicht so leicht durch halbherzige Entschuldigungen in die Irre leiten lässt. Ein einzelner Empfänger wäre sicher von Ihrem Brief beeindruckt gewesen.

Die Mutter meiner Kinder sagt: “Wenn man sich Entschuldigt, dann soll man sich nur entschuldigen. Nicht sich rechtfertigen und andere mitbeschuldigen.”. Aber mit Problemen in dieser Richtung sind Sie nicht alleine. Die Menschheit kämpft bereits seit Adam & Eva damit…

Who do you trust today? – Wem vertraust Du heute?

Ein lautes Argument gegen Open-Source war immer die Aussage: “Wenn jeder an den Quellen rummachen kann, dann kann doch auch jeder schädlichen Code in das Program einfügen. Bei Closed-Source ist dies nicht der Fall.” Alles Falsch!

In dem Interview GRC’s “MouseTrap” erklären Steve Gibson und Leo Laporte Details über den “Hintereingang”, der offensichtlich Absichtlich in verschiedene, neue Windows-Versionen eingefügt wurde. Steve Gibson nennt diese Lücke zwar nicht mehr “Backdoor” sondern MICE. Er erklärt unter anderem dass:

  • Entgegen der Aussage von Microsoft, die Windows-Versionen Win9x und frühere nicht gefährdet sind. Die scheint eine Verunsicherungstaktik zu sein, um die Leute zum Update zu bringen
  • Entgegen der Aussage von Microsoft, kann Windows NT 4 doch gefärdet sein (muss nicht!).
  • Es ist unklar, wer genau für den hinzugefügten Code verantwortlich ist. In Betracht kommen:
    1. Microsoft: Würde ein schlechtes Licht auf die Firma werfen. Man baut keine geheimen Hintertüren in Programme ein. Aus welchem Grund auch immer.
    2. Ein Mircrosoft Mitarbeiter, der nicht offiziell handelte: Würde ein schlechtes Licht auf die Firma werfen. Die internen Sicherheitsmaßnahmen sind offensichtlich unzureichend. Und vor allem: Wurde noch weiterer, geheimer Code eingefügt?
  • Sogar ältere Versionen des Windows-Emulator WINE betroffen sein können. WINE brüstet sich mit Bug-für-Bug-Kompatibilität zu Windows

Auf jeden Fall bleibt festzustellen, dass das oben genannte Argument gegen Open-Source Software nicht haltbar ist. Wenn die Quellen offen sind, dann kann jeder hineinschauen was und warum gemacht wurde. Allein durch die Tatsache, dass unerwünschte Funktionen in proprietärer Software besser versteckt sind, macht es nicht besser.

Also bleibt die Frage: Wem vertraust Du heute?

One loud argument against Open-Source was the statement: “If anybody can mess with the sources, then anybody could insert malvolent code into the program. Closed-Source does not have that problem.” – All wrong!

In the interview GRC’s “MouseTrap” Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte explain details about the “Backdoor”, which has been inserted into several newer Version of Windows, as it seems on purpose.
Steve Gibson does not call that whole “Backdoor” anymore. Instead he coined the acronym MICE. He explains amoung other things that:

  • Against Microsoft-statements, Windows 9x and earlier are not vulnerable. That appears to be FUD to get people to update.
  • Against Microsoft-statements, Windows NT 4 could also be vulnerable under certain circumstances.
  • It is not clear who added the code. The suspects are:
    1. Microsoft: That would cast a bad light onto the company. You don’t leave secret backdoors into programs. It does not matter for which purposes!
    2. A Mircrosoft employee, who did not act for the company: That would cast a bad light onto the company. Internal security-measures are obviously not good enough. And more importantly: Is there more secret unwanted code inside Windows?
  • Even older versions of the windows-emulator WINE can be vulnerable. WINE brags about bug-by-bug compatibility to Windows!

In any case, the argument mentioned above has been proven invalid. When the sources are open, anybody can check what has been done and why. The fact that unwanted functions are hidden in proprietary software does not make them better.

The question remains: Who do you trust today?

Linux Users May Be Breaking U.S. Securities Laws

The reasoning behind the headline “Linux Users May Be Breaking U.S. Securities Laws” is that those who violate the GPL have no right to use the software anymore. According to the “Sarbanes-Oxley Act” of 2002, companies need to “disclose ownership of intellectual property to their shareholders”. Thus if companies break the GPL, they also violate the SOA.

While this is true, we need to remember that:

  • I am not a lawyer, but violating the GPL can only be done when redistributing GPL-Software. Mere users are not in danger.
  • If you add GPL-software to your embedded devices and sell them, then you need to obey the GPL, or you are in danger.
  • The same is true if you add software that is under a proprietary license to your embedded systems and bread that license. The GPL is a license you need to obey, just like the MS-EULA is a license you need to obey. Just imagine what would happen if you unrightly put MS-code into your devices and they found out!
    If you are lying to your shareholders about who holds the rights the software you are selling, you are violating the SOA.
  • Why is it so surprising that violating the copyright can have dire consequences? People in the industry seem to have double-standards when they assume that stealing GPL-software has less consequences than stealing other software.

Sehr geehrter Herr von Matt,

wenn ich recht verstanden habe, sind Sie mitverantwortlich für die Kampagne “Du bist Deutschland”. Es geht mir hier nicht um die Kampagne. Es geht mir um die Äußerung in oben Zitieter Rundmail.

Falls Sie es nicht wissen: Das Recht auf “ungefragte Meinungsabsonderung” ist in der Bundesrepublik Deuschland im Grundgesetz verankert. Man braucht hierfür weder eine “nachweisbare Leserschaft” noch eine sonstige Genehmigung.

Es steht auch jedem frei, sich aus beliebigen Quellen zu informieren. Sollten freie Bürger dieses Landes nicht das Recht haben, die Meinung anderer zu lesen? Und zwar in Zeitungen, Weblogs und auch auf Klowänden? (Ich bin mir der Tatsache bewusst, dass die “Meinungsäußerung an Immobilien zur Verrichtung der Notdurft” eine Sachbeschädigung darstellt, und deshalb nicht von der Pressefreiheit gedeckt ist. Ich distanziere mich hiermit ausdrücklich von jeglicher Schmiererei auf fremden Eigentum!).

Bisher war dieses Blog nur “Meine Virtuelle Presse”. Ab sofort ist es auch als “Meine Virtuelle Klowand” zu erreichen.

Linux-AV is FUD

On the LBo-Mailing-List there has been a question regarding an article about AV-Software for Linux. The article is at http://nl.internet.com/… . There is only one sentence which explains the belief of the author:

“Even though there are very few viruses in the wild that affect Linux there is still the looming possibility for more and more viruses to be created.”

Error 1: There is NO Linux-virus in the wild. One “Proof of concept” once made it into the news. IIRC, you needed to download it by hand, change the permissions to make it executable by hand and then run it from a shell. Search google for “signature-virus” to see how contagious that can be!

Error 2: Just because there _might_ be some threat in the future, we need to install something now that serves NO real purpose. It’s like bombing the Vatican, just because it might maybe one day build a nuclear bomb and threaten the free world. Senseless!

Error 3: AV-Software protects us from all evil.
Those AV-manufactorers who did know about the sony-rootkit must answer the question: “Why did you not protect your customers against the rootkit?”
Those AV-manufacturers which did NOT know, must accept the question “Why did you not find out about this new threat?”

Rosegarden – Suse 10.0

Obwohl Novell selbst keine RPMs anbietet, gibt es eine Möglichkeit die Sequenzersoftware Rosegarden unter Suse 10.0 zu installieren. Rosegarden bietet einen tollen Noteneditor, der Partituren unter anderem ins Lilypond-Format exportieren kann. Die .ly-Dateien sind übrigens sehr Übersichtlich formatiert, wodurch sie sich sehr gut zur ‘humanen’ Kontrolle und Weiterverarbeitung eignen.

Der Rosegarden Noteneditor erlaubt das Kopieren und Transponieren von markierten Bereichen. Die Editierfunktionen sind meines Erachtens konfortabel. Rosegarden ist somit eine prima Hilfe für die Erstellung von transponierten Versionen von Liedern, die nicht in den Tonumfang bestimmter Instrumente passen. Für größere Satzprojekte kann man durch den Lilypond-Export sehr gut einzelne Stimmen grafisch erstellen und dann von Hand die Teile zum “großen Ganzen” zusammenfügen.

Das Rosegarden-RPM ist unter ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/…/RPMS.jacklab/ zu finden.

Zusätzlich musste ich noch “liblo” und “gengetopts” sowie “ladspa” installieren. Während “liblo” auf der gleichen Seite zu finden ist, wird “gengetopts” unter ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/…/RPMS.suser-oc2pus/ zum Download angeboten. “Ladspa” und dessen Abhängigkeiten sind auf der Suse-DVD mit dabei.

The two main arguments which are brought forth by many critics of Free Software: Lacking documentation and the wide variety of programs that do the same thing.

The proposed solutionis that simular project should be joined together and thus better programs and more recent documentation could be produced. The editorial of the german magazin iX closes like this:

If the Open-Source-activists would recognize the need for usable documentation and also the need for self-discipline would possilbly give back the freedom to simply work with applications to the users.

While it cannot be argued against the fact that there are many OSS-projects that are far away from alpha-quality and even unneccessary, the reasoning above is wrong. To suggest that Gnome and KDE, OOo and KOffice, Emacs and XEmacs (and maybe even vi) should be joined misses the goal by far.

Thes projects started with different aims and they follow different Visions. They implement the basics differently. These differences contribute to the value of Free Software. The freedom to simply work with an application only exists where there are applications that fit the way the user does his work.

By the way, this diversity already has been available with commercially developed software. There was AmiPro, WordPerfect and Word. There was 1-2-3, Multiplan and Excel. There was Borland TurboPascal, Microsoft Basics, RealBasic, and above all 6501-Assembler. There was TOS, GEM, WorkBench, OS/2 and DOS/Windows. And we all agreed: The paper the companies used to print the manuals was wasted. Lack of Quality of the applications or the documentation was not the reason for the disappearance of choice.

If the documentation of commercially developed software was that good, why are the shelves in the bookstores filled with books about how to use a word-processor? Why are the shelves filled with magazines that reveal “1000 sectret Tips for your operating system”? Authors try hard to keep up with the market-leader and that is alright. But to confuse the explainations of the IT-publishers with “good documentation of commercially developed software” is plainly naive.

Today, commercially developed software is also supported mainly over the internet, by other users. With special purpose applications, lack of documentation even opens up another stream of revenue: Software training.

Those who preach “commercial software is good software” that there are many Shareware, Adware, Cheapware or Whateverware applications that do not reach the quality of Free Software. The good and successfull of these are immitated by the market-leader and thus become obsolete. DoubleSpace, Norton Commander, Netscape Navigator, WinAmp or WinDVD are just some examples. Free Software is important, for it cannot be bought, and it is not vunerable to the regular maket- or powerstructures.

The Quality of documentation rises wherever there is a community of users that supports a product. This holds true in the commercial as well as in the free environment. But for a free product, it will happen more easily, since the community reaps the benefits of the volunteers and not a company that has grown much too big. Free Documentation does not grow as fast as Free Software, but it does grow. (The iX-editorial mentions lack of documentation of the OpenOffice.org-API: That lack has its roots in the strictly commercial roots as StarOffice). Books and magazines that cover Free Software increase both in number and in quality.

Free Hardware

With the preasure of the software- and filmindustry on the hardware manufactorer rising, it will be more and more difficult for Free Software to run on “standard-hardware”. By the time Windows (or however they call it then) only runs on office-XBox’s , the time will be ready for “Free Hardware” (Free Computers – FC?). These will be shipped with Linux (or whatever it is called then). FC/Linux, in addition to Apple/MacOS and X-Box/Windows, will be another choice of hardware that is tailored for a specific operating system. And that is what it is all about: Freedom is about choice.
